Just as the newer NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet K1 got an update, NVIDIA just recently followed through with the original SHIELD Tablet as well. The new update is SHIELD Tablet Software Upgrade 4.2, bringing some high fidelity audio goodness and Android security patches galore, plus some fixes for network reliability.
According to the NVIDIA support site, Software Upgrade 4.2 for the original SHIELD Tablet rolled out yesterday, so you can probably start checking your notifications if you own this device. The update list includes new features and tweaks, including a bump to Android 6.0 Professional Audio standards (which means low latency audio and 7.1 HDMI output, among other things), enhancements & fixes to Vulkan graphics API, some fixes to touch responsiveness, fixes for WiFi & Bluetooth connectivity-related issues, and the option to toggle the Navigation Button location.
The Android security bulletin for the month of June is included in the update, and that particular element also brings with it some vulnerability fixes. Most of the fixes there will be moot point anyways, since a lot of the vulnerabilities happen on Qualcomm chipsets. In this device, the original carrier of the Tegra K1 chipset, no need to fear for Qualcomm vulnerabilities.
The update has started rolling out via OTA, so the notification should get to you soon, typically within 48 hours. If you’re feeling impatient, you can manually check for the update by heading to your tablet’s Settings menu, going into the “About Device” section, and mashing the Software Updates button to your heart’s content.
