Data roaming is still pretty much a dreaded phrase for those who travel abroad and have experienced bill shock when they finally see how much their carrier is charging them for it. But some US carriers are already trying to solve that issue. For those of you who are Project Fi subscribers, you will be able to have access to mobile data (and high speed data at that) in more than 135 countries. And the best news is that it won’t charge you extra other than the plan you’re already paying for.
While of course you use your mobile device when you’re abroad, most of the time you either get a local SIM or you just look for WiFi hotspots. But Project Fi, which is of course owned by Google,is now offering their subscribers high-speed data when visiting more than 135 countries outside the US. They have also recently partnered with Three, an international telecoms and internet service provider that has networks in various countries like the UK, Netherlands, Indonesia, Hong Kong, etc.
Going online when you’re in another country is pretty important, not just for posting social media updates, but for keeping in touch with loved ones especially during emergencies, and of course for work purposes, accessing your emails and cloud services. Carriers are also now realizing that they are actually charging too much for data roaming that’s why you have T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T are offering some new data roaming features, although not all are running smoothly.
To entice more users to their new service, Google is offering $150 off the Nexus 6P if you buy it through the online store and you will activate with Project Fi. The offer will only last for a week so if you’re thinking of getting a Nexus 6P or signing up with them (or both), you should decide within the next few days.
