In a world of Spotify and other music streaming services, is there still room for radio programs and podcasts and the like? Well, BBC seems to think so, especially now that they have announced that their iPlayer Radio app is going international. The rollout begins with the app’s availability in the Republic of Ireland but hopefully it will go to a wider audience in the near future in order to make available the radio shows and podcasts that may be of interest to the rest of the world.
The app will give access to various BBC Radio stations on whatever device they’re using. This includes the BBC World Service in English which already has a global audience of 66 million, but will now be available for the first time on mobile devices through the app. Listeners will be able to access old and current episodes of their favorite programs, which includes news, music, drama, and comedy. If you don’t have time to listen to a lot of programs, there is also a curated BBC Radio highlights and collections.
BBC Radio also has its own cache of podcasts and through the iPlayer Radio app, you’ll be able to download and listen to them on your phone. There are also audio and video clips, live musical performances, daily schedules of all the shows, plus various categories in case you’re looking for a new program to listen to. The app also comes with a built-in alarm clock and night mode.
If you’re in Ireland (and in Britain of course), you can download the BBC iPlayer Radio app for free. There’s no news yet on when and what other countries it will come to next, except to say that it is an international rollout.
