Samsung recently introduced a new set of removable memory cards. It’s the first based on the JEDEC Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 1.0 Card Extension Standard, making it ideal for hi-res shooting of photos and videos using drones, DSLRS, 3D VR cams, and action cameras. Saving multimedia files can be more worry-free now with the new 256GB UFS card because it’s high capacity and fast.
If you may remember, Samsung showed off a 256GB Universal Flash Storage back in February. This new one is the removable memory card version that can very well rival SanDisk’s 256GB Ultra and Extreme microSDXC UHS-I cards that were announced last month. The new product from Samsung is also available in several storage capacities: 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB.
The new UFS card series is expected to provide user convenience and prioritize performance. Samsung’s VP for Memory Product Planning & Application Engineering Jung-bae Lee said that this “will provide ideal user experience for digitally-minded consumers and lead the industry in establishing the most competitive memory card solution.”
When it comes to speed and performance, the UFS removable memory card is five times faster than the typical microSD card. It can read 530 megabytes per second (MB/s). To give you an idea, that’s like copying a 5GB Full HD movie file within ten seconds. Read rate is at 40,000 IOPS. Write speed is 35,000 random IOPS–350 times than the typical microSD card speed today.
What’s interesting is that the Pin layout is different so it may not be compatible with the current microSD card slots in existing gadgets. If that’s the case, then most recent flagship phones may not support it. There’s a possibility that the Galaxy Note 7 may or may not support the new memory card.
