If you’ve become highly dependent on the mobile version of the Microsoft Office apps, then that means you are able to work anytime, anywhere (which may be good or bad news or both). So every new update that they bring to the apps is a cause for celebration as it will supposedly make your life better. All three of the main apps, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint all receive updates today, and while they are not major, they’re still pretty significant.
Some of the new features in the update can be found in all three apps. First off, you will now be able to read documents, sheets, and presentations that are protected by the information rights management (IRM) system, a kind of DRM subset that is used by Microsoft for their documents. You will also now be able to add your favorite or most-used files to the home screen so you wouldn’t need to search for them every time. Formatting is more colorful now as you can choose from more colors, fonts, and shapes. You can also now export your files to the OpenDocument format: .ods for Excel, .odt for Word, and .odp for Powerpoint.
There are also some app-specific updates. For example, for Word, you will now be able to open files that were previously saved in the plain text or txt format. For the Powerpoint app, you will now be able to customize the background of your slide, kind of what you do on your desktop version, but now you can also do so on mobile. There are no Excel specific updates this time around.
You can update your Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint through their respective Google Play Store pages. It might take some time for the update to reach all users, so be patient of you don’t have it yet.
