With video becoming more and more pervasive in our social networks, it was only a matter of time before platforms like Twitter and Vine will be expanding their video capabilities. And now the day has come when the two networks will allow you to post longer videos, 140 seconds to be exact. Previously Twitter only allowed 30 seconds while Vine became famous for its 6-second loops. Now you’ll be able to post and watch longer videos for information, entertainment, and creativity.
Twitter said that they have seen a 50% increase in video Tweets since the beginning of this year and it’s a sign that people are now more into both taking videos and also watching other people’s videos. So in the latest update to the app, you’ll be able to post 140 second videos, in keeping with the (still technically) 140 character Tweet limit. Some select publishers will still be able to post longer, 10 minute videos with Twitter’s professional publisher tools. But for the rest of us, 140 seconds will be the limit.
As for the Vine app, a lot of the creators on that network have already mastered the art of 6-second videos and have gone about creative ways to maximize this constraint. But now, they are going #beyondtheVine and allowing people to post 140 second videos as well. You’ll still see the 6-second ones, which will sort of act as a trailer for the longer video. You can click on the “Watch More” button so you can view the attached video. However, creating the #beyondtheVine videos is still in beta mode, so you would have to apply to be part of the program.
When viewing the longer videos in both Twitter and Vine, it will open in a new built-in full screen video browser. You will even see some suggested videos for further viewing below. Twitter is also giving its creators a new way to engage their followers with a new app called Twitter Engage.
