For the owners of the 1st generation of the Moto 360 who were eagerly awaiting the Android Wear 2.0 update, we have bad news for you. The OEM has confirmed, through a response from its Motorola Support Twitter account, that the latest major update from Google’s wearable platform will not be arriving for one of their earliest smartwatches. However, they will continue to reserve security patches from now on, which is the best thing you can expect for your 1st generation device.
While there is no official press release from the company right now, the Twitter account responded to an inquiry from a Moto 360 1st gen user, saying, “Unfortunately, Moto360 1 Gen will not receive the new update 2.0.” Although it may be disappointing for those who were actually expecting this update, you can’t really blame Motorola since the specs of the old smartwatch will probably not be able to live up to what Android Wear 2.0 will bring to wearables.
If you don’t plan to upgrade to a newer device, like the Moto 360 2nd gen, anytime soon, then you’ll have to be content with just receiving the general security patch updates that Google has promised all Android users in light of some bugs and security exploits to the various platforms. Some users still enjoy this smartwatch even if it’s already considered “old” by digital standards.
But if you do want to have the features that Android Wear 2.0 will bring, then you’d have to get a newer device. Some of the things it will have is improved smart reply options, third-party watch faces and complications, and even an on-screen keyboard (which you might not actually need). It is expected to come out this fall, although the developer preview is already out.
