Normally, US carriers give great deals for their subscribers who are going out of the country, specifically for roaming charges. But T-Mobile, which likes to refer to itself as the un-carrier is offering a great deal for tourists who will be visiting the US for a long-ish period of time. The T-Mobile Tourist Plan will let you enjoy text, calls, and data for a period of 3 weeks and it will only cost you $30.

It’s pretty simple to enroll in this program. All you have to do is to bring an unlocked smartphone with you when you’re visiting the country. Then go to any T-Mobile store and ask to be enrolled in the Tourist Plan. Sign-up, pay the $30 fee and then wait for the SIM to be activated. Once it is working, you will be able to enjoy unlimited domestic and international texting to more than 140 countries. You will also get 1,000 minutes of talk time, but only within the US. You will also get unlimited data access but you will only get 4G LTE for the first 2GB.

However, this plan will automatically expire after three weeks and if you’re staying longer than that, you would have to of course get a new Tourist Plan. And of course, while you can text outside the US, the calls are only allowed within the country. This may be important for some travelers, so this might be a deal breaker for them.

You also will not be able to add any other features on this prepaid plan. But other than that, it seems like a pretty good deal for $30. That’s around £21, 27 euros or AU$42 based on current conversion rates. The plan will be available starting June 12.

  1. Are they just giving you a different SIM for 3 weeks, or setting up your phones APN to roam on TMo’s network?
