Self-driving car advocates love to argue that most vehicular accidents are actually caused because there’s a human behind the wheel. And many of those accidents, in turn, are due to driving under the influence. While there are laws and even upcoming car technologies that can deter that less than responsible driving, in the end, it’s up to the human’s decision. To help that person make a smarter decision, DrinkMate offers a handy, smartphone-powered Breathalyzer that can alert you, or your family, when you have just drunk a wee too much.
There are quite a number of such portable breathalyzers in the market, but DrinkMate’s Breathalyzer for Android has a few advantages over them. For one, it’s portable to the fullest degree, as you only need to connect it to your smartphone when and only when you need to use it. It is powered by the smartphone’s micro USB port so there are no batteries or charging to worry about. And best of all, it uses a semiconductor-based sensor and doesn’t use a mouthpiece, which makes it more hygienic.
All you need to do when you need to test your blood alcohol levels is plug it into the smartphone and blow into the end. After a few seconds, the result will show in the accompanying app. The breathalyzer advertises an accuracy of +/- 0.01% BAC, at a BAC of 0.02%. It maxes out at 0.20% BAC, which is more than twice the legal limit in the US anyway. While it does warn you directly of your BAC levels, the app can also be configured to send the same data to family or friends, just in case you need some other voice of conscience.
The DrinkMate Breathalyzer normally goes for $40, but the 25% discount gives it to you for $29.99. Shipping is expected to start around June 6 to 9.
