The discovery of fire took centuries before we came to know electricity. It was such a long process but mankind was able to come up with electric lights. Lamps are needed everywhere whether at home or the office. And during the past decade, we’ve seen “smarter” ways in controlling the lights at home, thanks to smart home technology and LED bulbs. We’re not sure how eco-efficient they are but a new project on Kickstarter allows anyone to convert light into shareable energy–the BioLite BaseLantern. It’s a connected flatpack lantern that is a first in the world.

BioLite BaseLantern works via Bluetooth connectivity, giving light to places when you really need some illumination. It’s one lighting solution that’s very portable. It also works as a smart grid, as well as, a powerbank to give extra juice to tablets, smartphones, and other gadgets.

Feel free to also extend the light with the BioLite string lighting. When it comes to smart grid functionality, once unlocked, you can start enjoying Real Time Energy Analytics, Full Color Control, and Proximity Activation.

This BioLite BaseLantern makes camping more high tech now. You don’t have to rub two stones together to make fire and light. No need to bring matchsticks, gas, or lantern either because this BioLite BaseLantern will be enough. Just make sure you have lots of batteries with you. No wait, this BaseLantern can actually work as a powerbank.

BioLite BaseLantern – Smartgrid B

BioLite BaseLantern is a compact lantern that offers 500 lumens of light with a super small footprint. Other features include a 7800mAh rechargeable li-on battery, two USB charging ports, and two more custom ports. There’s a Low Energy Bluetooth companion app that you need to download for it to work and connect with other devices.

The team behind this project is still raising funds on Kickstarter. Goal is only $75,000 but over $350,000 have already been raised and with still 24 more days to go before deadline. Head on to BioLite’s Kickstarter page for more details.
