When Amazon released its Dash Buttons last year, which allowed you to use one-touch gadgets to reorder products that you regularly acquire, we knew it was only a matter of time until they would create something similar for the Internet of Things. Well that day has come as the online retail giant announced its AWS IoT button, a programmable Dash Button that could be used for a whole lot of things (other than order products) with just one tap.

It looks just like your typical Dash Button, but now this device can be set up to interact with several actions/programs that you normally do but would like a one-touch button to do it for you. For example, you can use it to trigger your programmable lights in the house. Or you can set it up to call for an Uber car in your pre-programmed location. You can also integrate it with APIs from Facebook, Twitter, Slack, etc.

The AWS IoT button needs to be connected to a WiFi network of course and it will link straight to the AWS could of Amazon. Setting up what function the button will do is pretty easy for beginners, but it also has room for more complicated projects that those who have more experience using the Lambda function can use. Amazon’s Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels said that if it’s something that can be done as an Alexa Skill, then it’s programmable into the button.

Originally, this button was to have been released on May 15 and would have cost $19.95. But the Amazon product page now only allows you to register for alerts for when the AWS IoT button will be available again, since the original batch has already sold out, according to Vogels.
