When the US and Cuba started to officially restored diplomatic relations last year after decades of enmity because of the Cold War, it meant also opening doors for business and tourism. And now if you plan to travel to the country soon and you’re a T-Mobile customer, you’ll be able to use your carrier for roaming services. The Un-carrier has inked a deal with Empresa De Telecomunicaciones De Cuba, S.A. (ETECSA), a Cuban telecoms company, in order to allow subscribers to make calls and send text messages when visiting Cuba.
According to T-Mobile President and CEO John Legere (and the numbers of course), they have more Cuban descent customers than any other wireless provider in the US. In fact, 36.6% or more than a third of Cuban-born wireless customers in the country are with the carrier, or so they claim. So it is but logical that they try to get roaming services, now that relations between the two countries are starting to get better (on paper, of course).
If you are a T-Mobile Simple Choice customer, you will now be able to call both landline and mobile phones in Cuba for $0.60 per minute through their Stateside International Talk. You would have to pay $15 per month though, but if you have relatives or colleagues over there, that should be worth it. And if you’re traveling there, then you will be able to call, text, and use your data starting this summer.
Leg ere of course took this opportunity to say, “The historic opening of Cuba is a natural opportunity for us to take action, and we are. That’s the Un-carrier way!”
