As of this month, there are apparently only 4.6% of Android smartphones that are running the latest Google update, Android 6.0 Marshmallow. In just a few days, owners of the Blackberry PRIV will be adding to that percentage as the OEM has announced that by May 3, the rollout will start to all major carriers that are offering the device. They say they are now part of the “elite group of smartphones” that will be running Marshmallow.
Aside from all the other goodies that everyone will receive (well, if their device is part of that elite group), Blackberry has also added some new features to the PRIV, leveraging on Marshmallow’s enhanced privacy, security, and usability. For example, the new S/MIME feature will give you the ability to digitally sign and encrypt your emails. And for some people, that is a very important thing that they want to see from their device.
The Blackberry Keyboard, which is one of the selling points of this device, will also be improved with the latest update. You now get more emojis, swipe gestures that will make it easier to input words in both the digital and physical keyboards, better word prediction, even for words with numbers, and better cursor control for your physical keyboard.
Other known Marshmallow features like Doze, better notifications management, Google Now on Tap, etc, will of course be included in the update. Marshmallow will be available for download by May 3 on ShopBlackberry.com and will also include Priv’s own May update.
