If you’re one of those old school people who still use their mobile devices to actually make calls, there is this whole new world of free voice calls that you can make using various messaging and communication apps. Soon to join this rank of apps is Slack but if you’re on their beta program you can already start using their special app called, well, Calls, to make mobile calls to your friends or colleagues, whether it’s a casual call or for business reasons.
Desktop users have actually been able to enjoy the Calls app for some time now, and it is an alternative to using Google Hangouts or Skype for your inter-office calls and group meetings. But now, beta users who have the latest version of the app will also be able to use it to make calls through the app itself.
Just open a direct message, whether it’s for an individual or group message. You will see a small arrow icon and when you click on it, it will open a menu. Towards the bottom of that menu, there is a feature that says “call (user)” and obviously, you have to press that to make that call.
They will probably make this feature available for all other Slack users in a few weeks once beta testing is done and all bugs have been fixed. In the meantime, you can try out the Calls feature in the desktop version while waiting for the mobile calls to take effect.
