If you’re a Nintendo fan and wanted to play this cool new app that’s become popular in Japan and is now available in the US, you might suddenly had a rude awakening when you realized that your jailbroken or rooted smartphone refuses to install the app. Or rather, Nintendo didn’t want any of those kinds of devices getting their own Miis and earning points. But of course, where there’s a will, there’s a way for tech-savvy users.

When the Miitomo app finally became available for users outside of Japan, people were pretty excited to try out this avatar meets messaging app and see what the fuss is about. But those whose phones have already been jailbroken or rooted found that whenever they would try to open the app, it would just crash. At first, it seemed like a bug error, but eventually, it seemed to be affecting just the rooted devices. Given the fact that most people who have those kinds of smartphones would probably be more tech-savvy than the rest of us, of course there’s a workaround eventually discovered.

First, you need to have Xposed installed in your smartphone. Then you can choose from the two available routes that will allow you to play Miitomo. One is by using Rootcloak, an app that hides the fact that your device is rooted. Just add Miitomo in the apps within Rootcloak and users have said this works most of the time. Another method would be to install the apk file in the MiitomoSecurityBypasser and install it on your device.

You ask, why would Nintendo go to all the trouble of not allowing rooted devices to use Miitomo? Well one of the benefits of using the app often is that you get points which you can then apply as discounts in the My Nintendo service. Let’s see if this workaround will work for you with the jailbroken smartphones out there.

  1. The logical and most obvious reason is to prevent “hacking” the game to give yourself unlimited coins/tickets. Which is nothing new really. Android games are notorious for being cheated, why bother paying for premium currency when some creep just unlocks everything with a hack.

That said, it says directly in the app that you can not use coins bought on Android on other devices, but iOS can keep coins used on other iOS devices.

Personally I don’t think it’s a wise idea to bypass this since it has to be linked to your Nintendo account to actually do much of anything.

  2. For me, that’s a fair enough reason to not bother with Miitomo at all. It was already kind of a tough sell. I’m holding out for actual Nintendo games…
(I’ll just take my judgment and get out of here now…)

    • You are spot on. Eff Nintendo. My phone, my choice whether it’s rooted or not. I was willing to install their insipid app….but no more.
