It’s hard to describe exactly what the Miitomo app is all about. It’s like a social network but with avatars. It’s somewhat a game but not really. It can also be a getting to know each other game or a let’s get to know each other more game for new friends and lifelong friends. But whatever you want to describe it, the good news is that it’s now available in the US for Android devices so you can figure it out for yourself.
With this app, you will be able to create your own Mii or characters that you can make to look like yourself or what you’d like to look like if you could change your appearance. It’s really like avatars but Nintendo would like to call them Miis. You can change the nickname, pick out their clothes, change their personality type, and even their way of speaking. The clothing items and accessories can be bought within the game through Miitomo coins that you can earn by playing the game/app often.
So how do you actually play it? You can use the Mii character to chat with your friends or even strangers that you will add as friends. You can ask questions and you answer the questions they ask you of course through your Mii. So it’s basically like a Q&A with avatars. But there is also a mini game called Miitomo Drop where you can get extra items by dropping your Mii on the platform to get them. You will also be able to get game tickets and coins through daily bonuses.
As early as now, there have already been a lot of sexual innuendoes, celebrity bashing, and if they’re not careful, this might evolve into a Microsoft AI chatbot level debacle. But if you want to try it out, you can download Miitomo from the Google Play Store for free, with in-app purchases of course. For now, it is only limited to Japan, the US, and several other countries.
