With Apple recently taking a punt at the midrange market with the iPhone SE, industry pundits have wondered how LG – the Korean manufacturer with a lot of its assets in the midrange and upper-midrange smartphone market – might react. Well, they got their reaction. The chief of LG’s mobile business has sounded off on Apple’s newest venture, saying that the new Apple smartphone is made with the “same old technology”.
Cho Ju-no, CEO of LG Electronics’ mobile business was at the opening event of a product experience store for the LG G5, with its accompanying modular device lineup, in Seoul. “Rolling out a product with same-old technology and features is not LG’s way,” the LG CEO said. “Even though LG Electronics is beefing up its budget smartphone lineup, it will focus on delivering fun and exotic value to customers through premium products like the G5.”
A lot has been said about Apple’s iPhone SE, with pundits saying that it’s really just an upgraded iPhone 5S. You get a 4-inch phone, with the processor, sensor, and camera from the iPhone 6S and not much else. Of course, Apple fans will have something to say about that.
Market analysts were asking if LG was concerned that Apple was also extending its reach to the midrange market, where LG has a lot of devices. Before this, industry watchers have predicted that LG will have a good year on the back of the LG G5, the upcoming LG Pay payment solution, and the G5’s modular accessories.
