In the age of audio streaming and podcasting, is there still some place for radio in our lives? Korean OEM LG thinks so as they have just announced their newest device, the LG Stylus 2, which is the first smartphone in the world to have DAB+ or Digital Audio Broadcasting, which is now the de facto standard for digital radio broadcasting. This was announced at Radiodays Europe 2016 which is the world’s largest radio conference.
The LG Stylus 2 will be released first in several European countries, specifically Australia, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom. What the device brings is a DAB+ chipset which will allow them to enjoy radio channels without their data consumption being affected. There is also an exclusive app bringing more digital radio broadcasts that you normally would not be able to reach in traditional FM. The audio quality is also superb and you get it for free with no additional data required.
The LG Stylus 2 also brings a technical interface which will allow broadcasters to develop their own apps, where broadcast radio meets the Internet. The smartphone has a 5.7-inch screen and a 1 watt speaker, plus a 3,000mAH removable battery, letting you listen to audio broadcasts with rich, multimedia content. It is powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz CPU, has 1.5GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage and comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.
What LG didn’t announce is the availability of the LG Stylus 2 as well as which other countries would eventually get it. There is also no price point yet for LG’s new smartphone.
