The 2016 Q1 numbers are out from benchmark outfit AnTuTu – that is, a simple aggregation and averaging of benchmark numbers from different mobile chipsets that have used AnTuTu’s benchmarking software. This time last year, it was the Apple A9 that was king of the hill, followed by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 950. Those two are still in this list a year hence, but top spot belongs to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset.
According to AnTuTu’s scores, the SD820 averaged around 4000 points higher than the Apple A9 chip, being used by more and more flagships now – including the Samsung Galaxy S7, LeTV MAX Pro, the Xiaomi Mi5, LG G5, and the Sony Xperia X Performance among others. As for second place, it’s a wonder that the A9 has held on to that spot for this long, and that it is still in second spot after a year. This is probably why Apple has held off upgrading to newer chipset for a year now, but they should be due the A10 this year. Third place goes to the new Exynos 8890 chipset, but those numbers come only from the single phone out there that uses this – the Samsung Galaxy S7.
Capping off the rest is the Kirin 950, way behind in 4th place, trailing by around 37,000 points to the new Exynos chipset. Samsung’s Exynos 7420 comes in fifth. A special mention needs to go to the new Snapdragon 652 and 650 chipsets. Midrange chipsets they may be, by the SD652 is actually very near in performance numbers to last year’s Qualcomm flagship, the SD810 – and should be a great midrange option this year.
Missing from the list are MediaTek’s Helio X20 deca-core processor because, well, there is no phone that uses that chipset just yet. In GPU performance, the SD820 (with the Adreno 530 GPU) takes the cake by a mile, followed from a distance by the Apple A9 (PowerVR GT7600) and the Exynos 8890 (Mali-T880 MP12).
