Haven’t you had those times when you wish there was a voice recorder handy so you could have recorded that moment for posterity? Or you tried to record it but by the time you opened your phone’s recorder and pressed record, that moment was gone? Well, as with a lot of things, there’s an app for that. Rewind: Reverse Voice Recorder is a newly-released app whose main purpose is to passively record everything that your phone hears.

The developer explained that the app was inspired by recent cases of police harassment on the news and that ordinary citizens need to have an app that will help them fight back against abuse of power. What Rewind basically does is is that it continually runs in the background and then records whatever it is that your smartphone is picking up. You can save the recent recordings if it’s something you think you’d want to keep or may need for later. You can either record from within the app or start a recording by toggling the app notification.

Why would you need to have an app passively record anything? It can be for the aforementioned proof that you’re being harassed or surveillance when you’re trying to catch someone in the act of doing something bad. It can be during brainstorming sessions you’re in so you can go back to moments you may have missed. It can be as backup for when you’re conducing interviews. It can be simply for recording your notes and memos, and even thoughts, if you constantly talk to yourself.

You can download Rewind: Reverse Voice Recorder from the Google Play Store for free. Oh and it’s ad-free too and there are no in-app purchases available.
