So a lot of tech and software companies are riding on the ridiculous amount of power a modern smartphone packs in its relatively handy form factor. The amount of computing power we have in our hands has increased in crazy levels in the past couple of years, and software developers are starting to think that maybe the smartphone can be just the one device that we need. Maru OS is an attempt toward this direction – software for your smartphone when you’re mobile, but able to become your desktop when you plug it in to a monitor.

Maru OS promises to turn your smartphone into a desktop when you need one, and one that contains all the files and images that you will need – because hey, it’s your smartphone as well. On the surface, Maru OS will give your smartphone an Android 5.1 Lollipop platform to work on normally. Connected to a monitor via HDMI or a SlimPort connector – and paired with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse – it gives you a desktop software running on Debian Linux, so you can work like you would normally on a desktop.

There have been a number of attempts to do this over the years, but the developers of Maru OS think that now is the ripe time to come out with this given the level of computing power current chipsets and hardware are giving smartphone users. Remix OS is another one of these minimalist projects, but Maru OS is unique in that it claims to only ever need your smartphone as your essential hardware.

At this moment, Maru OS says that you can test out the software using a Nexus 5 smartphone, as that is where the beta version is compatible at the moment. This is not even a flagship level phone. We are piqued enough to watch this space as the project develops over time. What do you think of it? Let us know, but check out the source link below for more info.
