Ok, so we’re reluctant to call it a smartphone. It’s more like a great point-and-shoot with a gorgeous lens, AND you can send text messages with it. That’s probably how far we’re willing to go to describe Panasonic’s new Lumix DMC-CM10, and that’s because this is only how far the specs will take you. It’s still a wonderful device, mind you.
The Lumix DMC-CM10 is obviously a descendant of the DMC-CM1. The earlier version, we can easily call a “camera smartphone” or “smartphone camera” – whichever you think is right – because it allows voice calls. Yes, sadly, Panasonic has dropped the capability to make voice calls from the CM10. The source link below confirms that the LTE-capable device (when a SIM card is inserted) will only be able to send SMS messaging as network communications, apart from internet/data-based communications through apps.
We can now confirm that the Lumix CM10 comes with a 4.7-inch FullHD display, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor – interestingly, same as the CM1. It’s supported by 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage, with a microSD slot for expansion up to 128GB – all these are the same from the CM1, although this time it comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.
The main upgrade would probably by in the 20.1MP camera with a better sensor and software engine behind it. Also, while most newbies would just use the autofocus on the Leica lens, the mechanism actually has a manual adjust mode for advanced users. You can still directly upload your wonder pics, as LTE data connectivity is available. The release says that it will be launching (most likely in Japan) on February 25. No news on when this device will make it over to the US.
