Before, if you wanted to replicate a movie house experience at your house, you’d have to spend a fortune, especially when it came to audio equipment. But with the arrival of new technology and affordable (well, to a certain extent) devices, it has become easier to have your own home theater system without selling an arm and a leg. To kick off their CES 2016 campaign, Samsung has unveiled the new HW-K950 Soundbar, and its major selling point is that it is equipped with Dolby Atmos tech.

If you don’t know why this is a big deal, consider this: it is the first for the brand to have the “overhead surround” system. And it is also the first soundbar in the market to actually have wireless rear speakers that can support Atmos. The 2.1-inch soundbar has three forward-facing drivers and two upwards-facing ones. If you want a full 5.1.4-channel audio, then you will be able to pair it with a subwoofer and the rear speakers.

Dolby Atmos is actually a pretty neat audio tech that doesn’t just give you surround sound, but also adds support for noises that would seemingly come from above. So if you have a scene in the movie you’re watching where birds are singing from high up the trees, then it will sound like the singing is really coming from above you. So imagine how much more cooler chase scenes (if there are helicopters involved) and action scenes will be if you have this tech on your speakers without needing to have a room full of speakers.

Samsung has a lot more music and movie focused tech in CES 2016, including a revamped Wireless Audio 360 Series speakers (with new colors and patterns), new companion apps for the Gear S2 and Gear S smartwatches, and a new Samsung Multiroom app to turn your smartphones and tablets into better remote controls for your speakers.
