If you have an old school Pebble and you don’t feel like getting anything new over the next few months, then you should update to the latest firmware in order to feel like you have a new device. Well, sort of. The latest update brings Timeline to both Pebble Classic and Pebble Steel. Also, finally, they get into the health monitoring market by introducing their new toy called Pebble Health, available for the newer Pebble devices.
Even when Pebble was busy kickstarting Pebble Time, they promised that they promised that they wouldn’t forget their older devices and will eventually bring them into the 3.0 operating system eventually. And now, it has finally arrived with the release of Firmware 3.8, bringing with it support for the timeline feature and finally, unlimited apps as well. There are also improvements in the music control, Facebook Messenger notifications, as well as the usual bug fixes.
But of course the highlight of this new firmware is the introduction of Pebble Health which focuses more on personal health rather than arbitrary parameters. Your progress is measure against your personal average, and it also tracks the length and quality of your sleep. It is compatible with other fitness apps like Google Fit, so you can use it in conjunction with these apps. The best thing about it, if you’re a developer, is that Pebble is opening up the Health API so you can make apps and watchfaces for Pebble users.
Unfortunately, Pebble Health is only available for Pebble Time, Pebble Steel, and Time Round smartwatches. You can now upgrade your Pebble devices and the Pebble software as well. Pebble Classic users will be asked to uninstall the previous app and migrate to the Pebble Time app.
