It really was only a matter of time before virtual reality pictures will be readily available to consumers. Well, that is if you have a Google Cardboard and if you download the new Cardboard Camera app, both of which are pretty easy to do. The app allows you to take these VR pictures and then view them by placing your phone inside the Cardboard itself. Will this actually kickstart a more aggressive campaign for Google to market their VR paraphernalia?
But let’s start with the easy (and the free) one first. The Cardboard Camera app will turn your Android smartphone into a VR cam, allowing you to take panoramic photos. Just hold your phone out and move it in a circle, capturing all the elements you want to take. But after you’ve taken it, how will you be able to actually view it in all its VR glory?
That’s when Google Cardboard will come in handy. You place your phone inside it and suddenly, you’ll be seeing photos in three-dimensional panoramas. Near things will actually look near, and those that are far will be far, as you have slightly different views for each eye. So it will give you the illusion of actually stepping into the photo you’re viewing. And if you recorded sound while you were taking the VR photo, you’ll be able to listen to it as well.
Reliving special moments that you took with the VR camera app will now be more “true to life”. So better get that Cardboard Camera app from the Google Play Store. And if you don’t have it yet, you can then get a Google Cardboard like the UC 2.0 which is one of the cheaper ones at $19.95 or an official one like the Knox V2 which is at $23.95.
