At this point in our tech history, we have accepted that one of the most – if not the most power hungry element in our smartphones is the display. And the more vivid, the more pixels, the more color you want on your screen, the more power it uses up. Low power options like E-Ink are not viable, since we all need color in our lives. But what if there was a new display technology that could give you all you need, without using any power at all?
UK-based Bodle Technologies are doing a lot of research into a new technology which they say could change the tech industry and market forever. They are looking into “extremely thin, flexible, transparent layers of a new smart material” that can be used to create high-resolution displays. The best part? It might not require any power at all to run.
Bodle Technologies founder Dr. Peiman Hosseini says that this new tech will lead to displays utilizing a phase change material that needs virtually no power to function. The new tech will use electrical pulses to create vivid pictures with a process based on the technology used for rewritable CDs and DVDs. Hosseini is still keeping the information under wraps for now, but notions of what could be done with the tech is exciting.
“We can create an entire new market,” Hosseini said. “You have to charge smartwatches every night, which is slowing adoption. But if you had a smartwatch or smart glass that didn’t need much power, you could recharge it just once a week.” Imagine that.
