Because this is the season of giving (and if you’ve run out of gift ideas), Google has decided that it would allow you to play digital Santa with your friends, but only if you live in the US. Android users are now allowed to send Google Play credit gifts to their friends who they believe will be happy to buy apps, games, and in-app purchases, more than receiving a picture frame or towel.

Starting today, you’ll see a new option on the sidebar of your Play Store page, and it says “send gift”. That doesn’t mean you can send flowers or chocolates to your intended recipient, but rather you can send them Google Play credits through email. You can send in denominations of $10, $15, $25, $50, or if you’re feeling really generous, $100. There isn’t any limit to how many credits you’d like to send of course.

You’ll have to supply the recipient’s email address and include a short message to them, lest they think this was a scam or virus. You will only be able to pay for the credits through a valid credit/debit card that has been connected to your Google account. You can also use your Google Wallet to pay for it. What you can’t do though is use your Play Store balance to pay for your gift.

As mentioned earlier, this is still limited to the US market for now. No word yet if this will be rolling out to other countries and regions as well.
