Android Wear Wrist Gesture Control 1.4 update

Google has recently released an update to the Android Wear platform. The 1.4 update brings a new set of wrist gestures, allowing new ways to control the smartwatch. Swiping the small touchscreen display to the left or right is already possible but with the new gesture controls, you can just flick your wrist for the wearable device to follow a certain command.

Android Wear is gaining a lot of traction these days especially since more watchmakers are entering the game and mobile carriers are now adding cellular support. From just Bluetooth to WiFi to cellular connectivity, the smartwatch industry has quickly improved within a year. The first Android Wear watch to have cellular support is the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition which Verizon has recently listed it up for pre-order. We can expect more brands and models to follow in the coming weeks but for now, enjoy the new features that come with the Android Wear 1.4 version on your own smartwatch.

‘Wrist Gestures’ are usually enabled on an Android Wear-powered smartwatch. Check if it really is turned on simply by going to the Settings> Wrist Gestures> Gesture tutorial. You can now test and practice gestures from there. The smartwatch will depend on the speed and direction of your wrist movement. Take note that it won’t respond to the range of the motion but the wrist’s motion speed and direction.

Google has noted that enabling and using the wrist gestures will decrease battery life. It won’t be as significant but expect a slight decrease. The tech giant also listed some other things you can do on your smartwatch with wrist gestures: Scrolls through cards, Take action on a card, From the watch face, and Back to the watch face.

(1) Scroll through cards
• To see your first card – Touch screen to wake up the watch. Flick wrist away from you, slowly turn it back towards you. This will bring the card up.
• To scroll to the next card – Flick wrist away from you QUICKLY, turn it back slowly.
• To scroll back a card – SLOWLY turn wrist away then quickly flick it back towards you.

(2) Take action on a card
• To see more details or take an action. Hold arm in front of you, push down quickly, and bring it normally to original position. Push down a card to take you to the card’s first action. Push down the second time and it will select the first action.
• To go back – Hold your arm in front of you, quickly pivot up, and bring it back to the original position in a normal speed. Shake wrist to go back to the watch face.

(3) From the watch face
• To open the apps menu – Hold arm in front of you, push down quickly, and bring it back to original position.
• To pull down settings from the watch face – Turn wrist away from you when on the main screen, quickly flick back towards you.

(4) Back to the watch face
• Hold arm in from of you, jiggle or shake wrist out, and quickly a couple of times.
Try these wrist gestures and let us know if you or other people don’t find it weird doing those hand and wrist gestures in the air.

  1. Are people really this “needy”? Only a Dumbazz needs a Smartwatch. There are sure a lot of ’em around, so they’ll probably sell a lot of ’em. If you don’t like what I wrote, I’m sure there’s an App on your watch to block it. Or something. Ai yi yi!
