You hear people say that “everything old is new again” when it comes to pop culture, design, fashion, etc. Well in the digital world we kind of have almost the same thing going on, except it’s everything analog is new again, or rather, digital. It has to do with the fact that a lot of analog things like photos, journals, art, are being repurposed and digitized to make a new creation. Photographer Carl Kleiner did that with the Android Lollipop wallpaper series, and now he’s back to do more of the same but different of course with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
If you think that your pretty and colorful wallpapers for Lollipop were all digital, apparently they’re not. They were designed and crafted photographs from Kleiner, and he based them on the early material design studies that Google designers used. Now for the latest major update for the platform, he has been commissioned once again to create a new set of wallpapers that will be the default for smartphones and tablets once they have been updated to Marshmallow.
This time around, instead of the bold color shifts of the previous update, he relied on tone and texture and exploring the subtle shifts within them. He was going for the “subtle and sophisticated” look, using such things as painted surfaces, color pigment powders, floating ink, among other things to add texture. The colors are of course mostly using the Google palate, with just a little neutral gray in between.
Google even shows a glimpse into the workshop of Kleiner and the philosophy behind the design. And of course, you get to have two free wallpapers, even before Marshmallow gets to you. You can get either the red or blue wallpaper and use it wherever you want.
