It was more than a year ago when NVIDIA filed patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung and Qualcomm. It was the first time ever that the American chipmaker initiated a lawsuit against any company for infringing patents that is NVIDIA’s “foundational invention” which is the GPU.
As a response, Samsung then filed a counter lawsuit, saying that NVIDIA practiced “false advertising” for saying that the Tegra K1 is the fastest mobile processor in the world as found in the SHIELD tablet. Samsung reacted this way because according to the South Korean giant, its Exynos 5433 processor is faster. Of course, NVIDIA replied that theirs is faster, showing a table how it is faster than the Exynos 5433.
After almost a year of waiting, Samsung has been finally cleared by the U.S. International Trade Commission (US ITC) on its use of NVIDIA’s graphics chip technology without compensation or permission. In a ruling last Friday, October 9, Judge Thomas Pender stated that Samsung did not infringe a couple of NVIDIA patents. Another patent was found to infringe but the judge said it is invalid because it’s really not a new invention compared to the first two.
Samsung did not make any comment on the favorable ruling by the US ITC. Meanwhile, NVIDIA is still confident in the case, saying the ruling will still be reviewed by the full commission, according to Robert Sherbin, NVIDIA spokesman.
