As the excitement over the newly-announced Nexus devices will likely increase over the next few days, one thing that may be overlooked as some gush over the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P is the fact that Google is offering users something called Nexus Protect. On paper, it’s just another “warranty” for your device but if you accidentally damage it or there are some mechanical deficiencies, then this will definitely become important.
For an additional cost, you will be able to extend the life of your device, should there be either accidental damage or device malfunctions. For the former, your smartphone is covered for up to two incidents for two years of accidental damages like drops, spills, cracked screens. For the latter, your standard one-year warranty for device malfunctions will now be extended to two years, as long as the error is not the owner’s fault. First year is covered by Google, while the second year is through their partner, Assurant Solutions.
Before you “start a claim for your device” though, Google advises you to reboot first your phone, as this may just be a bug or something. You may also want to go through their troubleshooting steps first before filing that claim, in case the problem can be solved through there.
The only catch here is that you can only get Nexus Protect for your devices if you buy the Nexus 5X or the Nexus 6P through the Google Store. It will cost you $69 for the former and $89 for the latter.
