Anki Overdrive is the successor to Anki Drive, that first great idea of combining virtual gaming with real world toy car racing. Anki Overdirve has a lot of new features and improvements from its predecessor – but the most important piece of news today is that this piece of gaming genius is now available at retail stores in the US and in Europe.

At its core, Anki Overdrive is a racing game, like its predecessor before it. The game puts you in control of the high-tech robot cars from the comfort and convenience of your Android device – whether tablet or smartphone. From there, you can start races against friends and family. The track utilizes a magnetic modular system – this is key to the concept. The cars follow the track automatically, and being modular, players are able to create custom tracks in just a few minutes. If fully fleshed out, tracks can include jumps, turns, and even elevations.
Specifically for Overdrive, you will get new racing modes to explore, like “King of the Hill”, or time trials, or just the basic race. With weapons and upgrades available on the virtual side, it creates crazy gaming experiences. The learning curve is a bit steep, and the setup is not easy, but the payoff is really great. Of course, you will have to download the free Anki Overdrive app over at the Google Play Store.

The Anki Overdrive Starter Kit will sell for USD$149. This includes two cars, a charging dock that can support up for four cars (additional cars are sold separately), and 10 pieces of plastic-coated track material, consisting of six curved pieces and four straight pieces. Additional track pieces will cost anywhere from 10 to 30 dollars, and additional cars at USD$50.00. It’s quite expensive to fully flesh the racetrack out. The Anki Overdrive will be available via Anki’s website, and also from Amazon, Apple and Target, with international availability including Harrods, Selfridgets, Kaufhof and others.
