Didn’t you know? Sony is doing ala Kickstarter by launching the First Flight crowdfunding platform for its new products. The program was introduced last July but it was only now that the first project is being made known to the public. First Flight’s first “flight” ever is this Wena smartwatch that surprisingly works only for iOS.
Wena means “wear electronics naturally”. It looks like any ordinary round-faced watch but this one comes with an NFC wallet that is Japanese Felica standard-compatible. It can also work as an activity tracker, as well as, display notifications through an LED light you see on the wrist band or through vibration.
Actually, this doesn’t look like an ordinary wrist watch because of the Chronograph features on the screen. You’ll see three buttons on the right side and three dials. It’s a nice-looking Chrono smartwatch that is expected to be available March 2016 with a starting price of $287 (¥34,800) for the basic silver Three Hands model and almost two times more expensive at $576 for the black Chronograph model.
We have no idea if this will be under the Sony brand but the Japanese company is helping the developers with crowdfunding the campaign. We’re not sure why there’s no Android compatibility but I don’t doubt an Android Wear version will be available someday or when the Wena is finally released.
Not much details on the specs and special features but the Wena watch can track the user’s number of steps or calories. Set the target number of steps and Wena will tell you of your progress.
