Last we heard about the Cerberus anti-theft app was that it was adding Android Wear support. Sadly, the developers had to make an important decision by ending those “lifetime” licenses they have previously given. Why is this happening? We’re guessing maybe, lack of resources.

It’s such a great app, giving triple protection for any Android device. If you log into your Cerberus account, you’ll see that the licenses will expire in less than two weeks. On the app though, there is no notice that those free lifetime licenses would be expiring. However, on the web interface, the Cerberus devs added a link to a PayPal page where the €4.99 ($5.6) license can be paid.

The most probable reason could be money because you know, “free stuff” still cost something. It’s simply not feasible right now. A Cerberus developer released this statement about the change:

We had to revoke free lifetime licenses that were given away during a few promotions we made years ago. We apologize for this and know it is a bad PR move, unfortunately it was not feasible anymore for us to provide a free service for life.

Free licenses will expire about 3 years after their beginning, and affected users will be notified via email before the license expires. We hope Cerberus helped those users recover a lost or stolen device, and that they will consider buying a license to continue to use our service. Paid licenses are not affected.

Plain and simple. It’s not really feasible. A lifetime promise is too much and developers still need to earn. The Cerberus team should have thought about this well even before offering the licenses for free but past is past. Let’s move on and pay if you want those full lifetime licenses.

  1. It’s clear these guys are making a last gasp effort to get some money before going out of business. Any money you pay them will be absolutely wasted when that happens.

Characterizing lying to customers as “bad PR” is common for for people who have no integrity.

Writing articles that suggest readers “move on” by throwing away their money on this dishonest company is just plain stupid.

  2. Reminds me of the dot com days where sites would say we will never sell your information. Then when they approached bankruptcy they couldn’t sell your info fast enough.
