Messaging apps have been trying to one up each other over introducing new features and updates, in their respective bid to win you over and start using their app more often than the other gazillion ones in the market. WhatsApp, Viber, Messenger, Hangouts, and the others are all vying for users attention. BBM is still very much in the game, and now they’re introducing something really practical and hopefully useful: Paypal payments through the messaging app.
Yes, you read that right. You can now exchange money, if your money is on Paypal, just by messaging someone through Blackberry Messenger, which is more commonly known as BBM. You don’t even have to install the PayPal app on your device in order to send or receive money through the messaging app. So if you need to send money to your kid in college, or if you need to remind your friend that she hasn’t paid you back from two months ago, you can do all that without leaving your chat, and just do it through the same conversation you’re currently having.
To set it up, you need to select the “Send Money” icon and then connect your PayPal account. Whoever you’re sending money to or receiving it from should also connect their accounts to their BBM. After you’ve both done it, you now just have to click on the PayPal icon, type in the amount you want to send or receive (make sure you have enough money in your account of course) and then send it or request payment from the person you’re chatting with.
Initially, this will only be available in beta mode experience for select users in Canada. But eventually, they plan to roll it out in other countries, and hopefully in all countries where there is PayPal.
