I thought we’re done with drop tests? Apparently, not for the guys at Digiato.com who recently published another brutal drop test of a Samsung Galaxy S6. So it’s just another drop test? It’s not an ordinary test because the smartphone was dropped from a higher altitude–not three feet nor six feet–but from an altitude of 50 feet! That’s a drone you see ladies and geeks. The phone was dropped from a high altitude but before that heart-stopping fall, the device was also dropped from three sides: bottom, back, and front. Those were some rigorous tests but nothing like the last one.
First test was a casual drop from chest-level height with the bottom of the phone going down first. The result was only a slight damage on the right bottom corner. It was a small scratch on the aluminum frame but the display was still intact.
Next test was another drop with the back side of the phone facing the ground. It was interesting to watch because it’s a glass back cover. Still, nothing happened. The display and the back cover remained intact with only a small damage on the aluminum frame around the body. No serious damage yet.
When dropped from about six feet, the phone was still not damage. Just some more scratches around the aluminum frame again. The Gorilla Glass 4 screen could be the phone’s saving grace, at least, in this test because it seemed very resistant to drops. Phone was dropped again, this time with the front display going down first–still no damage.
In this part, we can still say the Galaxy S6 is one solid mobile phone.–camera is intact and device is still working fine.
But use a drone with some custom built mechanism that drops the phone when it reaches 50 feet, what do you think will happen?
The last drop test was from a 50 meter high altitude.
Hold your breath. There you go…
The result? Tragic.
The smartphone’s screen is now cracked but the back panel and aluminum frame were still intact. The display didn’t turn on but when the home button is pressed, there were some vibration. It could still be working but display wasn’t working. The SIM card slot got out of its place as well. The Samsung Galaxy S6’s screen was cracked but that’s not really a serious damage. Thanks to the Gorilla Glass 4’s good resistance.
Honestly, I still think the Samsung Galaxy S6 is one tough device under ordinary, not-so-extreme conditions. The phone surviving a human height level was enough to convince me that the Galaxy S6 is ready for rugged use. The 50-feet fall is just…too extreme. I’m not saying it couldn’t happen in everyday life but any device being dropped from that height will really not survive. It’s just plain old physics. I don’t need an actual drop test to tell me that.

There must be better things to spend the time and resources on than this pretty much pointless drop test.
Rewatch the video. That was not 50 feet, but 50 meters (about 164 feet)! I would not expect any phone to work right after that.
