We wrote about this software called Dolphin Emulator before because we wanted to bring you up to speed on possibly the only group trying to bring emulation of old Nintendo Gamecube and Wii games to the Android platform. There has been a lot of progress in the release candidate for version 5.0, and we’d like to point out a few – specifically the move to bring Dolphin Emulator to Android TV platforms, and the current effort to provide usage for Wii remotes.
As we wrote before, the developers of Dolphin Emulator are keen to take advantage of NVIDIA Tegra-powered Android consoles and devices to make up for the lack of processing power in Android mobile devices. Front and center, of course, is the most powerful Android device in the market today – the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV console, with its NVIDIA Tegra X1 processor, 256-core GPU, and 3 GB RAM. With Dolphin Emulator 5.0 RC, a fluid Android TV UI has been designed. Take a look at the video below.
Also, we have to understand that the compatibility of Wii remotes to platforms such as Android were never the top priority pre version 5.0. With even Gamecube titles struggling to be played at normal speed before version 4.0, the Wii remotes were clearly not in the radar yet. But now that Wii games are now very close to being played over Dolphin at full speed, the developers are now thinking of emulated Wiimote support – that means creating an app to emulate the Bluetooth connection of a Wiimote to an Android device, since native pairing is not supported. See the video below for what has been done.
So it looks like we’re pretty close to a version of Dolphin Emulator being finally stable and putting out playable emulation support of Gamecube and Wii games. It needs a powerful Android machine, to be sure, but we have that now in the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV console. Imagine finally being able to play Zelda on your Android TV. Such a wonderful thought.
