Gone are the days of lugging around with you a heavy LCD projector that takes a million years to set up and whose quality is not always that great. With the advent of pico projectors, we now have the ability to put in our bag, or in some instances, literally our pocket, a portable one that we can carry around for meetings and presentations. Sony’s latest one is is the MPCL1, and even thought it’s coming out this October, we can start getting excited about it now.
Unlike other pico projectors that are LED and DLP, the MPCL1 is actually a laser projectors. While the 1920×720 resolution isn’t quite full HD, it’s still way better than most of its competitors, which usually have a WVGA 800×480 resolution. But what really makes this one standout is its use of a technology called PicoP laser-beam scanning system that allows the projector to focus itself, even if you beam it on uneven surfaces. You can easily move the projector nearer or farther from the wall to adjust its size, but no need to adjust the controls as the lasers in it will do the job.
However, the disadvantage of this is that it only has a brightness rating of 32 lumens, which is way below the 200-500 that a lot of portable projectors have. But lasers have a low luminous flux and have a really high luminous intensity, which basically means it has sharper images. The catch is that you would have to use it in really dark rooms in order to really take advantage of those images and not have dim ones. It is capable of projecting 40-inch diagonal images from 4 feet away and give you 120-inch images from up to 12 feet away.
While it is nothing compared to Sony’s 2,000-lumen short throw projector that can bring 4K images to your walls in tight spaces, the MPCL1 is way more affordable at just $350 and is the size of a smartphone. It will be available on Amazon this October.

I’m interested in purchasing a pico projector after my friend showed me his AAXA Technologies pocket projector he got for $100. I think I would like to get a better one like their new AAXA’s ST200 or Vivitek’s 3D capable projector since those have built in media players which is a nice feature. Can you suggest other projectors with more features?
