We don’t know exactly why Sweden and what’s with mobile users over there, but they are the “chosen country” for Sony to launch their new Concept for Android initiative. It is actually the OEMs own take on an original concept operating system, but still based on the current Android 5.1 Lollipop that their device is running on. Sony said this is part of their plan in “ensuring our products and services are as good as they possibly can be.”

If you live in Sweden and you have an Xperia Z3, you’ll get the chance to participate in the Concept Initiative by registering (but you should probably read the full terms and conditions, just to be sure). But you better hurry as there are only 500 slots available for you to be part of this “experiment”. Sony says there are differences with this trial OS as compared to the commercial releases that they have so far, using more of a “vanilla” Android look and feel. It also includes the Sony features and apps that have been most popular with users.

The reason for this Concept for Android trial is to see if there is potential in expanding Android operating system concept initiatives for other markets, devices, and users someday. They believe that this will eventually lead to a model that is free to create experiences that are also based on user input so that Sony will be able to respond to feedback faster and easier.

OEMs slowly moving or modifying the standard Android OS may be good or bad news, depending on how you look at it (or if you’re from Google). But that is part of what makes this whole platform so special and engaging, is that anyone is free to tinker with it or customize it according to their needs. Let’s see what comes out of this Sony Concept for Android experiment.
