Don’t tell us that this hasn’t crossed you mind, sitting there with a robust smartphone like the OnePlus One, the Sony Xperia Z3 or the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and thinking, “Wouldn’t it be nice if I could play Final Fantasy X on my Android device?” For most hardcore gamers, this will have happened, at some point in time or another. There isn’t a stable emulator for the PlayStation 2 on Android YET, but it’s not stopping Jean-Philip Desjardins, a hobbyist programmer, from trying.
His emulator project is called aptly called “Play!” and the goal is to create a working emulator that will allow people to play their favorite PS2 games on their PCs and on their Android devices. There is only one emulator out there today that kinda works on most games, and it is for the PC platform – the PCSX2 emulator. Desjardins hopes that his project reaches that level of gaming playability, especially on Android. See his progress in the video below.
As you can see, that is Final Fantasy X running on a Xiaomi Mipad. The developer admits that the project is not at any kind of stable level yet. But given the fact that this is a solo project and a hobbyist project at that, the progress is encouraging. Go give this guy a hug – well, a virtual hug – and let’s hope he continues this project.
Emulating for the Sony PlayStation 2 is devilishly difficult, as the platform was built during a time when synchronization between GPUs and CPUs were still primitive, compared to today. There are a lot of asymmetrical and asynchronous processes that makes it difficult for developers to code – basically, you will be emulating the hardware. It also takes up a lot of your device’s resources. Let’s just hope this project moves forward.
