If you’re a Skype user, their mobile app has probably served you well, letting you converse with your family, friends and colleagues through free messages, audio calls, and video chats. But there are times when for one reason or another, you don’t have access to the app itself but you still need to communicate with them. If you live in the US and UK, you can just now log on to your Skype account through the web portal and you’ll be able to do so.
Skype for Web is still in the beta phase but it is running and functioning, at least for the basic functions and for residents in the US and the UK. If you’re using a device that doesn’t have the app installed, just go to Skype.com and log in with your usual Skype ID, or if you don’t have one yet, then that is the time for you to sign up and enjoy free messaging and calls to the people you need to reach, either for personal or business purposes. You would need to install the plug-in though before you make or receive your first call.
Once you’ve logged on, you’ll see that your existing contacts and conversations will automatically sync. And instead of them being on separate lists, they’re now on a timeline view or “a single, searchable list” that should make it easier for you to either continue chats or start new conversations. You will also be able to receive notifications so that even if you’re doing something else, you won’t miss important messages or calls from your Skype contacts.
Skype for Web is just available for US and UK residents for now. But they promised they will be rolling out worldwide in the next few weeks, so just watch out for further news.
