A few years back, in order to create an impressive video with time-lapse editing, you needed one or two high-end cameras, a tripod or two, plus hours of editing the footage you’ve collected. With the technology and apps available now, the process has been pared down considerably. In fact, Microsoft says you can do it with just your mobile phone, and maybe a steady hand (a tripod or monopod won’t hurt). Welcome to the world of Microsoft Hyperlapse.
Now before you say that Microsoft is ripping off Instagram’s hyperlapse feature, it is worth noting that they were the ones who first coined the phrase a few years ago. There was a bit of discussion when the photo sharing app owned by Facebook announced their feature last year, but instead of making a bigger hubbub, Microsoft decided to “fight back” by releasing their own app, which has a better and more cross-platform approach than Instagram.
Basically, what it does is will take the long footage you’ve shot and then allow you to combine, condense, and edit it into a short time-lapse video. And you don’t even need to do it on a desktop (although there is a desktop version, Microsoft Hyperlapse Pro). You just need your mobile phone to have all the footage and you’re all set. It’s always a pretty neat tool to have, especially when the footage you have is more interesting when seen in timelapse version.
For now, the Android version of Microsoft Hyperlapse is still in beta version, but free. You need to join the Preview community over on Google+ so you can download the app. No word yet if it won’t be free anymore once it gets out of the beta preview version.
