This has probably happened to you once or twice (or a lot). You need to do some social media research on what are the trending topics or you’re bored and just want to know what people are talking about on Twitter. So you click on the trending topics, but more than half of what’s there is indecipherable to you (what the heck is a #KathNiel? A new breed of feline?). Twitter wants to help you solve the trending riddle with the latest update to the app.

Below each trending topic, you’ll now understand what the acronyms or abbreviated terms mean. Not only that, you’ll also get an explanation as to why that topic is even trending, which can also be a way for you to catch up on breaking news. Or it also might make you question why humans still exist or why the world is getting more stupid by the day. But either way, at least you’ll now have the context as to why people are talking about certain celebrities, happenings, topics, etc. It will also include how many tweets have been posted about the trending topic and whether it’s still going up or it’s on the way down.

The trending topics can now be found in the search page, and you can also now say goodbye to the Discover and Activity tabs (we never really loved you anyway). Recaps and tweets from within your network are still there, but they are also looking into improving these features and making it more relevant to users.

The update is rolling out but only to Android users in the US. They will expand it to more territories and even to the web version, but there is no specific time table as to when it will arrive. So yeah, if you’re outside the US, you have to keep on guessing what those trending hashtags mean.
