We’ve already seen the separation of the main Facebook app with its Messenger on your mobile devices. We were angry at first, but most of us have now learned to live with it (we said most, not all). Now we may be seeing the start of this separation on the web version as well, as Facebook has now launched a stand alone version for the web.

But don’t worry, you’re not being forced to use this (well, at least not yet) app/web page, but it’s just an alternative (for now) to communicating with your friends, without seeing your Facebook timeline. You can head on over to messenger.com so you can access your already existing chats and messages, as soon as you log in to your Facebook account. So yes, you still need an account and it should be the same one you’ve been using do other Facebook stuff, other than chat.

You will still be able to access your Messenger on your Facebook page, if you still like chatting an d then browsing through all your social media contacts’ updates. But, if we follow their logic with what they’ve done with the app, we might eventually see that we will be redirected to messenger.com when we try to open the messages tab on our main page. One possible reason for this separate web app is that there are a lot of simpler phones that have an easier time accessing programs and features through web apps, specifically in emerging markets like India.

Some users have reported not being able to use messenger.com yet and it just shows information about messenger. This is probably due to the fact that they’re still rolling it out in some territories. You can try clicking on the messenger icon in the top left part of the screen, but if nothing still happens, just wait a few hours or days more.
