Owners of the Motorola flagship Moto X 2nd Gen will probably be among the first non-Nexus devices to receive the first Lollipop update, Android 5.1. The OEM announced, “We are excited to announce a new software update for XT1095 by Motorola.” They then enumerated the changes that owners can expect, which includes camera enhancements, Android Run Time (ART) improvements, and a feature that Google initially said would only be available for Nexus devices.

The changelog indicates that when the Moto X is updated, users will get the Device Protection feature. Initially, Google said that only the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 that have Lollipop out of the box will have this, which will lock your device if it gets stolen or lost, even if they reset to factory settings. It will only unlock once you sign in with your Google account and you input the PIN, password or pattern screen lock. The camera enhancements that comes with the update includes letting you take better photos in low-light situations by reducing the noise and improving responsiveness in the front-facing camera, otherwise known as the selfie cam.

Apps will now supposedly launch quicker because of improvements to the ART. When it comes to notifications, you can now swipe them up to remove them from your screen but it will stay in your notifications tray unless you choose to dismiss it totally. There are also improvements in the notifications, lockscreen performance, quick settings and the usual bug fixes and improvements.

Motorola advices users that in order to have a successful installation, the phone needs to have at least 50% charging and should be connected to a WiFi network. The OTA update will probably reach the Moto X Pure Edition first before moving on to the carrier devices. The update is expected to arrive in the next few weeks.
