Smartwatches have both been a boon and a threat to regular watch makers. While some people have totally “switched allegiance” to their more technologically advanced younger siblings, still some longed for the elegant and traditional design and functionality of “old school” watches. But even the Swiss watchmakers have accepted the fact that they need to step up their game towards the tech generation. Some have grouped together to form a group called the Swiss Horological Smartwatches.

Instead of just competing headlong with more established smartwatch makers like Samsung, Motorola/Lenovo, LG, etc, and even the upcoming Apple Watch, what this consortium of sorts will do is use their secret weapon called Motion X which will be the middle ground between new technology and the traditional quality and elegance of Swiss watches. It is an activity tracker that can be embedded into traditional and classical watches. It will function the same as the activity trackers in your usual smartwatches as it can monitor your steps, calories burned, sleeping patterns, etc. It will then transmit all these information to an app on your connected Android device. This Swiss Joint Venture SARL is called MMT, short for Manufacture Modules Technologies,

The main difference between this and other smartwatches is that users will not see all this happening on their watches because the watch face will still be completely analog. This means your watch will still look classic and elegant, maintaining the quality of Swiss design that people admire. This also means that the batteries will last longer, more than two years, and not the almost daily recharging of smartwatches.

The MotionX Horological Smartwatch Open Platform is expected to produce more than 10 products to the market starting this June. The first three are the Mondaine Helvetica No. 1, Fredrique Constant’s Horological Smartwatch (cold silver and steel design), and the Alpina Horological Smartwatch (39mm stainless steel or metal bracelet). There are no price details yet, and the smartphone app is expected to come out this June as well.
