You remember the days when you had to wait until you’ve saved enough cash just to buy that G.I. Joe action figure you’ve been looking at the whole summer? I know I remember. Well, there might just be only a few ways that today’s time is better for kids than our time before, but the new Tinkerplay app will surely classified as one of those “better” things.

Imagine just asking your dad to 3D print a toy (that you yourself designed!) rather than spend all your hard-earned cash on a branded one at the mall. That can now be possible with the Tinkerplay app, designed by AutoDesk, which allows users to design parts for an action figure and print them out on a 3D printer.

There are a lot of templates and parts available within the app to build all sorts of characters. You can start a plain humanoid shape – and then start to add some unique shapes and designs from there. The interface is easy enough to teach to kids, that this might finally push you to getting that 3D printer just for them.

This is not just a good substitute for buying action figures, but something that will train kids towards more creative hobbies. Will you be willing to try this one out? The app is free to install via the Google Play Store – but of course, you need a 3D printer for this to work.
