After Apple has finally announced more details about their very first wearable, the Apple Watch, it seems highly unlikely that Google will not make even more improvements to their very own Android Wear smartwatch platform. Rumors about the next update to the software says that it will finally turn on the WiFi support, as well as give users easier access to the apps and notifications on their smartwatches.
According to a “knowledgeable source”, the next update may not be that major, but it still aims to give users a better experience on their wearable. Most Android Wear smartwatches actually have built-in WiFi already so all Google needs to do is to activate that feature through a software update. It will make it easier for the smartwatch to have connectivity independent of the connected smartphone, as some developers can create apps that can standalone on the wearable.
Another supposed update would be to add gesture control support to Android Wear. You don’t need to swipe with your other hand to just look at the notifications. You just need to make a gesture like flicking your wrist in order to go through the notifications synced to your smartwatch. The platform’s UI will also be tweaked so that you can have easier access to the apps and even your contacts, unlike now where you either have to swipe through a lot of steps or make voice commands to activate the app you need.
Apple may be a little late in the game in terms of entering the smartwatch market, but its entry will definitely keep rivals on their toes. The fact that both smartwatches can only work with their respective smartphones (Apple Watch for iOS devices, Android Wear for Android smartphones) means the competition will both be limited and high-stakes at the same time. You wouldn’t want Android users suddenly switching to iOS just because they prefer the Apple Watch over Android Wear smartwatches.
