If you’re a fan of Chinese movies or even ancient Chinese legends, then the story of the Monkey King will be familiar to you. There have been poems, books written about it, and there is even a blockbuster movie starring Hong Kong superstar Donnie Yen. This new Android game from Ubisoft may have just loosely based its storyline on this legend, but it’s no less fun, if you’re into Chinese pop culture, endless runners, and becoming animals, at least on your mobile device.
Monkey King Escape tells the story of, who else, the Monkey King (here he’s an actual monkey) and his flight to escape from his nemesis, the Jade Emperor of the Heavenly Kingdom. The Monkey King stole and ate the Peaches of Immortality, something which he should have been guarding, because the emperor did not make him a god. So now, the Jade Emperor is angry, and so you, as the Monkey King, will have to escape.
The game has all the elements that make an endless runner fun: great environments to run in, bonus coins and special gifts to get while you’re running, tough bosses to challenge you, bonuses to collect, etc. You also have the ability to change into certain animals, like a bird if you run into a wall you can’t climb, in order to get past obstacles. There are also four playable characters that you can unlock along the way.
