If you like keeping up to date with the latest news but you’re always mobile, then Twitter and news feeds are your best friends. But what if you wanted to watch actual live streams of ongoing breaking news or programs and you didn’t have access to an actual TV set at the moment? A new feature of the NBC app now lets you watch live programming from your smartphone or tablet, although where it is available is still pretty limited for now.
The live streaming has been available on the NBC website since December, and now, they have pushed this feature to the Android app as well. However, not everyone in the US will be able to do so. Only those cities where the local affiliate is actually owned by NBC will be able to have access to this live stream. That includes New York City, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, and Washington D.C. This means that the local NBC affiliate is owned and operated by the media conglomerate itself.
Another condition is that you need to subscribe to a participating cable subscriber and verify that account on the app itself. But even if you don’t get the livestream feature, the update to the app also includes an expanded library of such classic shows as The A-Team, Battlestar Galactica, Knight Rider, Kojak, Miami Vice and The Incredible Hulk. Again, you might need to sign up to verify you’re a cable subscriber.
You can download the NBC App for free from the Google Play Store. However, for viewing the TV shows and live streaming, standard data charges from your carrier may apply.
